You can only zip/unzip files using Deflate. It's not part of Windows because Microsoft doesn't want to add it. Not sure which part you're asking why to. Of course it might also be an issue with actually writing that data back into an uncompressed file or a myriad of other things, this is just a theory after all. Once it needs to, it loads each entry's actual compressed data onto ram and starts decompressing it, then the process I described above can occur.

So when winrar loads an archive it might just load the metadata until you actually do anything with the archive like extract it.

Of course with archives (or at least zip files from what I'm familiar with) the process is a little less straight-forward.Įach compressed file inside an archive is typically represented as an "Entry" which stores the file's compressed data and metadata attributes (its name, size, and such).
This is usually the result of RAM leaks and other RAM-related issues. So as a program is reading reading the file the data being read is stored in RAM and that RAM entry can get corrupt.
